Calabar High Court Sentences Child Rapist to Life Imprisonment

In a decisive triumph for justice, the High Court in Calabar sentenced 39-year-old Usual Etim Udo to life imprisonment for the rape of an eight-year-old girl in March 2025.
On February 24, 2026, Justice Blessing Egwu issued a landmark judgment, imposing a life sentence on the convicted child rapist. The ruling emphasized the Cross River State judiciary's unwavering commitment to protecting children from sexual violence and affirmed that such offenses will incur severe penalties, underscoring the court's dedication to safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
Barrister James Ibor, Principal Counsel at Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI), commended Justice Egwu's resolute adjudication. He expressed gratitude to Police Commissioner Rashid Afegbua, Attorney General Ededem Ani, Director of Public Prosecutions Okoi Ukam, and prosecutor Rajunor Tom for their diligent efforts in advancing child protection.
BRCI's statement articulated: "Offenses against children will not be tolerated. The justice system has responded decisively. Children's rights are firmly enshrined in law, and perpetrators will be held fully accountable."
