Anambra Police Detain Officer Over Viral Video, Begin Disciplinary Action

The Anambra State Police Command has addressed a viral video circulating on social media in which a police officer was seen allegedly issuing threats of violence and engaging in conduct deemed inconsistent with the standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
During a press briefing in Awka, the Deputy Commissioner of Police for Finance and Administration, DCP Ngozi Ezeabata, speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, stated that the Command had swiftly identified and taken the officer concerned into custody.
She identified the officer as Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP Newton Isokpehi, who is currently posted to the Anambra State Command. Following an immediate review of the footage, the Command activated internal disciplinary procedures against him in accordance with the ethical standards and disciplinary regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.
DCP Ezeabata further disclosed that the officer had undergone a drug test as part of efforts to establish all circumstances surrounding the incident and to ensure a transparent investigation.
CP Ikioye Orutugu condemned the conduct depicted in the video, emphasizing that the Nigeria Police Force is a disciplined institution that does not condone misconduct, abuse of office, incitement, or any form of unprofessional behavior that could erode public trust.
The Command assured residents of Anambra State and the general public that the outcome of the disciplinary process would be made public. It added that any officer found culpable would face appropriate sanctions in line with police regulations and the law.
Officers and men of the Command were also reminded to remain professional, emotionally stable, and respectful in the discharge of their duties, particularly at a time when public conduct is subject to scrutiny through social media and other platforms.
The Command expressed appreciation to members of the public, civil society organizations, and social media users for providing credible information that enhances accountability and service delivery. It encouraged residents to continue reporting incidents or behaviors that could threaten public peace, safety, and confidence in security agencies.
