FG Declares May 27 and 28 Public Holidays for Eid-el-Kabir Celebration

The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays in commemoration of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration. The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through an official statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, in Abuja.
According to the statement, the declaration underscores the Federal Government’s respect for the faith and spiritual heritage of millions of Nigerian Muslims joining the global Islamic community in observing the sacred festival.
The minister congratulated Muslim faithful in Nigeria and across the diaspora, describing Eid-el-Kabir as a festival of profound spiritual significance rooted in sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion for humanity.
He further urged Nigerians to use the festive period for prayers and sober reflection, while seeking divine guidance for the nation as it continues its pursuit of peace, security, and national prosperity.
“It is in the spirit of brotherhood, shared humanity, and national unity that the Federal Government wishes all Muslims a peaceful, blessed, and joyous celebration,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, the Headquarters Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, announced the implementation of comprehensive security measures ahead of the celebrations to ensure the safety of residents across the North-East region.
In a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of the task force, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, the command disclosed that intelligence reports indicated that remnants of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) may attempt isolated attacks during the festive period.
The military, however, assured residents that adequate security arrangements had been put in place to guarantee a peaceful and secure Eid-el-Kabir celebration across the region.
