Anambra Police Arraign Igbo Times Publisher Ejike Ofoegbu Over Alleged Defamation of Governor’s Family
The Anambra State Police Command has arraigned Mr Ejike Ofoegbu, alleged owner and publisher of Igbo Times Magazine and iNews, before a competent court over allegations of publishing fabricated, untrue and defamatory reports against the family of the Governor of Anambra State.
The arraignment, which took place on July 13 came after the Command received the suspect from the Department of State Services (DSS), Awka, and completed investigations into a petition alleging the dissemination of false information capable of causing reputational harm and inciting public disaffection.
In a press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command confirmed that the suspect has been remanded in a correctional centre in the state. It added that it would refrain from making further comments at this stage, as additional remarks could prejudice the ongoing court proceedings.
The command also advised members of the public, media practitioners and publishers to exercise due diligence in verifying information before publication. It urged all stakeholders to adhere to the ethics of responsible journalism and comply with extant laws governing the dissemination of information.
