Ikezue Commends Otti Over Abia Education Reforms, Says Measures Will Ease Parents’ Burden
By Chizoba Njaka
The Labour Party Senatorial Candidate for Anambra Central Senatorial District, Ven. Tochukwu Sagacious Ikezue, has commended Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, for signing into law reforms aimed at regulating practices in the state’s education sector.
Ven. Ikezue, in a statement issued by his campaign office, described the reforms as people-oriented measures aimed at sanitising the education sector and reducing what he described as financial pressure on parents.
He said the reforms cover public and private schools in Abia State and include the reduction of the cost of the School Leaving Certificate to N2,000.
According to Ven. Ikezue, the new provisions also restrict students from changing schools in SS2, with students expected to remain in the same school for their senior secondary education.
He further said students would be required to write their WAEC or NECO examinations in the schools where they completed SS2, while candidates would have to pass a government-set examination before being eligible to register for external examinations.
Ven. Ikezue also highlighted the reported introduction of reusable textbooks, saying the measure would enable families to pass textbooks from older children to their younger siblings instead of purchasing new copies every term. He added that the reforms discourage extravagant graduation ceremonies for nursery and primary school pupils.
The Labour Party candidate said the measures would help address practices he described as exploitative within the education sector and reduce the financial burden on parents.
According to him, “Governor Alex Otti has shown that government can be on the side of the people. This is the Labour Party template making quality education affordable, accessible, and free from extortion."
He added that the reforms represented an approach to education that he would like to see replicated in Anambra Central and other parts of Nigeria.
The Abia State Government has previously said education remains a major priority of the Otti administration, citing investments in school infrastructure, teacher recruitment and training, and other education reforms.
