By Chizoba Njaka
The newly inaugurated Mayor of Idemili South Local Government Area, Hon. Oluchukwu John Ilogbenu, has declared environmental renewal an immediate priority of his administration, unveiling a grassroots development agenda aimed at building a cleaner, safer, healthier and more prosperous Idemili South.
Ilogbenu made the declaration on Saturday, October 3, 2026, during his inaugural address at the Local Government Secretariat, Ojoto, where he said his administration would be guided by the philosophy, “Idemili South Rising From the Grassroots to Greatness.”
He said the administration would immediately domesticate the Anambra State Government’s environmental emergency response, focusing on flooding, erosion, blocked waterways, indiscriminate waste disposal and poor environmental sanitation.
The Mayor announced the establishment of an Idemili South Environmental Emergency Action Committee to coordinate urgent interventions across communities. He said the programme would include drainage and waterway clearance, improved waste management, flood and erosion prevention, cleaner markets and public spaces, tree planting and community beautification.
Ilogbenu also announced plans for a comprehensive baseline assessment to guide development planning and budgeting. According to him, the assessment will cover infrastructure, Primary Health Centres, schools, revenue and economic opportunities, environmental and drainage conditions, as well as security needs.
On healthcare and education, the Mayor pledged to strengthen Primary Health Centres as genuine first points of care, with emphasis on maternal and child health and essential equipment. He also promised to assess school infrastructure and learning needs, building on his previous interventions in WAEC registration sponsorship and school renovation.
On security, Ilogbenu said his administration would convene a Security Stakeholders Summit involving security agencies, traditional institutions, town unions and community security structures. He added that the council would explore practical measures, including strategic solar street lighting, to improve security across communities.
The Mayor further pledged systematic attention to internal roads and drainage while creating a more enabling environment for traders, artisans, professionals, entrepreneurs and young people. He said the administration would also engage the private sector, diaspora, development partners and other stakeholders in sustainable community development.
Reflecting on his previous service as Councillor representing Nnobi Ward 2, Ilogbenu cited the Light-Up Ngo solar streetlight project across 11 roads, support for Umuagu Model Health Centre, WAEC registration sponsorship, school renovation and road interventions as examples of what community-government partnership could achieve.
He thanked Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo for providing a development framework through the Solution Agenda and pledged to translate the state government's programmes into practical results at the grassroots. He also commended his predecessor, Hon. Mrs Amaka Obi, for her contributions to community development and women and youth empowerment.
Ilogbenu called on residents, traditional institutions, town unions, churches, markets, businesses, professionals, youths, women, civil servants and members of the diaspora to become active stakeholders in his administration, stressing that his government would be judged by measurable outcomes rather than promises.
“Together, we will build a cleaner, safer, healthier, more productive and more prosperous Idemili South. Idemili South is Rising From the Grassroots to Greatness,” he declared.

The newly inaugurated Mayor of Idemili South Local Government Area, Hon. Oluchukwu John Ilogbenu, has placed environmental renewal at the centre of his administration, unveiling a broad grassroots development agenda focused on making the area cleaner, safer, healthier and more prosperous.
Ilogbenu stated this on Saturday, October 3, 2026, during his inaugural address at the Local Government Secretariat, Ojoto, where he outlined his administration’s vision under the theme, “Idemili South Rising – From the Grassroots to Greatness.”
The Mayor said his administration would immediately adapt the Anambra State Government’s environmental emergency response to the local government, with particular attention to flooding, erosion, blocked waterways, indiscriminate waste disposal and poor sanitation.
To drive the initiative, he announced the establishment of an Idemili South Environmental Emergency Action Committee, which would coordinate urgent environmental interventions across the various communities. He said the programme would cover drainage and waterway clearance, improved waste disposal, flood and erosion control, market sanitation, tree planting and beautification of public spaces.
Ilogbenu also disclosed plans to conduct a comprehensive baseline assessment of the local government to provide reliable data for development planning and budgeting. The exercise, he explained, would examine infrastructure, Primary Health Centres, schools, revenue sources, economic opportunities, environmental and drainage conditions, as well as security requirements.
On healthcare and education, the Mayor pledged to reposition Primary Health Centres as effective first points of care, with particular attention to maternal and child health and the provision of essential equipment. He also promised to evaluate school infrastructure and learning needs, building on his earlier interventions in WAEC registration sponsorship and school renovation.
Addressing security, Ilogbenu announced plans to convene a Security Stakeholders Summit involving security agencies, traditional rulers, town unions and community security structures. He added that the council would consider practical measures, including strategic solar street lighting, to enhance security across communities.
The Mayor further promised systematic intervention in internal roads and drainage, while creating a more favourable environment for traders, artisans, professionals, entrepreneurs and young people. He said his administration would also partner with the private sector, the diaspora, development organisations and other stakeholders to promote sustainable development.
Reflecting on his tenure as Councillor representing Nnobi Ward 2, Ilogbenu cited the Light-Up Ngo solar streetlight project covering 11 roads, support for the Umuagu Model Health Centre, WAEC registration sponsorship, school renovation and road interventions as evidence of the impact that collaboration between communities and government could achieve.
He commended Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo for providing a development framework through the Solution Agenda and pledged to translate the state government’s programmes into tangible results at the grassroots. He also acknowledged the contributions of his predecessor, Hon. Mrs. Amaka Obi, to community development as well as women and youth empowerment.
Ilogbenu urged residents, traditional institutions, town unions, churches, markets, businesses, professionals, youths, women, civil servants and members of the diaspora to participate actively in his administration, stressing that his government would be measured by concrete and measurable outcomes rather than promises.
He declared: “Together, we will build a cleaner, safer, healthier, more productive and more prosperous Idemili South. Idemili South is Rising – From the Grassroots to Greatness.”
