Anambra Police Command Takes Proactive Steps to Prevent Truck Accidents

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has initiated proactive measures aimed at preventing future truck accidents within the state.
Orutugu, reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing safety in Anambra State through proactive policing strategies and community engagement during a meeting with representatives of the Truck Union at his office in Awka. This gathering underscored his dedication to fostering collaborative relationships with key stakeholders to prevent accidents and ensure a secure environment for all residents.
He emphasized the imperative of inter-agency collaboration, stating that the Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps, and other relevant stakeholders will work in tandem to implement and enforce stringent safety protocols for drivers and owners of articulated vehicles.
The Commissioner noted that the recent truck accidents, particularly the fatal incident on March 15, 2025, at Upper Iweka axis, Onitsha, necessitate engagement with truck drivers and owners saying that the accident resulted in the loss of six lives and left several others injured.
According to eyewitness accounts, the accident occurred when a truck lost control and collided with pedestrians, two tricycles, and a commercial bus carrying passengers.
He also characterized the incident as a preventable tragedy and expressed his deepest regret over the loss of lives. The CP further emphasized the need for proactive measures to avert similar incidents in the future, outlining key strategies to be considered, including: Conducting risk assessments, regular vehicle inspections and providing safety training.
In light of the aforementioned strategies, "the command is committed to proactively preventing avoidable tragedies and ensuring the safety and well-being of all road users within the state, thereby promoting a secure and accident-free environment", he added.
Meanwhile, in attendance were: the Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps in Anambra, JN Alexander, Senior Officials of the Police Command, Representatives of Tipper drivers and Owners, the Assistant Commissioner of Police overseeing the 29 Squadron of the Mobile Police Base, and several divisional Police Officers in the Command.
