Anambra Security Forces Crackdown on Armed Hoodlums, Recover Weapons and Vehicles

A joint security operation led by the Anambra State Police Command successfully intervened in a shooting incident that occurred at Oko and Ekwulobia Flyover at the early hours of today being July 9th, 2025, within the Aguata Local Government Area.
In a press release issued to journalists in Awka, by the State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, detailed the outcome of the operation, noting that one armed assailant was successfully neutralized and the following items were recovered: one AK-47 rifle, one automatic pump-action gun, and four vehicles specifically: A red Toyota Camry (ENU 58 SC), a custom-colored Mercedes Benz GLK (without registration number), agold-colored Lexus 330 (ENU 815 AP) and an ash-colored Toyota Highlander (GDD 517 RW).
According to the report, unidentified gunmen initiated an unprovoked attack, firing indiscriminately beneath the Ekwulobia flyover. The Joint Security Team responded swiftly, engaging the perpetrators in a fierce gun battle. Tragically, two civilians were fatally injured during the incident, and a brown Toyota Sienna vehicle, allegedly belonging to the Anambra State Vigilante Group, was torched. The bodies of the deceased have been recovered and transported to the morgue for post-mortem examination and further handling.
The report also noted that security operatives are now maintaining a sustained presence in the area, with continuous operations to ensure stability and safety.
In a related development, the Oko Divisional Police Headquarters came under attack; however, the officers on duty demonstrated exceptional bravery, successfully repelling the assault. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. Meanwhile, the Joint Security Team is presently pursuing the assailants aggressively, with efforts ongoing to apprehend the culprits and restore order in the area.
In an effort to restore public confidence and safety, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has deployed additional security measures. The public is urged to remain calm and collaborate with security agencies as they work to ensure the continued safety of all citizens.
