Deforestation and Sustainable Energy: Prof. Theresa Onuegbu's 110th Inaugural Lecture Issues a Call to Action

A sense of anticipation filled the atmosphere as esteemed professors from the Faculty of Physical Science and other faculties of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, gathered to attend the eagerly awaited 110th Inaugural Lecture. Professor Theresa Uzoma Onuegbu, a scholar of international standing and impeccable reputation, was set to deliver a lecture that would undoubtedly captivate the audience with its intellectual depth and insight.
Professor Onuegbu's lecture, titled "Averting Deforestation Through Deployment of Agricultural Wastes As Sources of Energy for Domestic and Industrial Uses: Perspectives of the Fire Chemistry," examined the profound environmental implications of anthropogenic deforestation. Her presentation underscored the imperative for innovative energy alternatives, highlighting the efficacy of agricultural waste briquettes in mitigating deforestation, fostering sustainable development, and alleviating the impacts of climate change.
She elucidated that anthropogenic activities, including agricultural expansion, urbanization, logging, and mining, precipitate severe environmental degradation through deforestation. The escalating costs of conventional energy sources, such as cooking gas, kerosene, and electricity, exacerbate this issue, resulting in a heightened dependence on wood-based fuels. Consequently, this perpetuates a cycle of deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and increased carbon emissions, underscoring the need for sustainable energy alternatives.
The illustrious Prof of Polymer and Fire Chemistry, asserted that the utilization of firewood constitutes a significant driver of deforestation, particularly in developing nations. Furthermore, unsustainable harvesting practices precipitate forest degradation, loss of biodiversity, and elevated carbon emissions. In light of this, she advocated for the exploitation of agricultural waste as a viable renewable energy source. By leveraging this waste, it is possible to generate energy while concurrently conserving forests and promoting sustainable development.
She further posited that agricultural waste briquettes constitute a sustainable energy paradigm, mitigating waste disposal challenges while fostering a cleaner environment. These briquettes provide a consistent and reliable energy source, thereby rendering them an efficacious and energy-efficient alternative. Their versatility enables utilization in domestic applications, including cooking, heating, and electricity generation, as well as in industrial settings, powering machinery and processes.
Professor Onuegbu categorized the diverse types of briquettes and their benefits as follows: Coal Briquettes: an efficient and convenient alternative to traditional coal; Charcoal Briquettes: distinguished by their prolonged duration, high thermal output, and virtually smokeless combustion; Biomass Briquettes: a renewable energy source characterized by carbon neutrality and low sulphur content as well as; Wood Briquettes: marked by low ash and sulphur content, enabling efficient energy generation.
She however posited that a paradigmatic shift towards agricultural waste briquettes could yield significant environmental benefits, including reduced deforestation, enhanced sustainability, and mitigated climate change impacts.
In a separate address, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi, represented by Professor Ezimma Nnabuife, formally acknowledged and commended Professor Theresa Uzoma Onuegbu for her exemplary courage and significant contributions to the advancement and development of the institution. This gesture served as a testament to the high regard and esteem in which Professor Onuegbu is held by her colleagues and the university community at large.
Professor Ekpunobi characterized Professor Theresa as a distinguished scholar in the field of Chemistry, exemplifying academic excellence adding that as a seasoned educator and prolific researcher, her academic contributions encompass a broad spectrum of disciplines, including Polymer Chemistry, Fire Chemistry, Renewable Energy, Green Chemistry, and Environmental Sustainability.
The occasion was attended by a gathering of prominent dignitaries, comprising Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi, Acting Vice Chancellor; Professor Obidimma Emma, former Acting Vice Chancellor; Professor Joseph Ikechebelu; Professor Stella Anyasi, University Librarian; Professor Josephat Ogbuagu, former Provost of the College of Education Technical, Umunze; and Professors Austin Ebeatu and Ifedioramma Nwana, both former Deputy Vice Chancellors, alongside other respected members of the academic community.
Meanwhile, the ceremonial highlight was the special investiture of Professor Theresa Onuegbu, followed by the unveiling and presentation of her portrait, serving as a tribute to her outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment to academic excellence.
