NAWOJ Zone C Demands Urgent Action on Sexual Violence and Maternal Mortality, Praises State Leaders

The South-East Zonal Executive Committee (ZEC) of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has sounded an urgent call for decisive measures to tackle the escalating sexual violence against minors and high maternal mortality rates in the region.
Meeting recently at Lyon De Gold Hotel, Enugu, expressed serious concern over growing reports of sexual abuse targeting young girls. The ZEC condemned this disturbing trend and demanded rigorous enforcement of existing laws to protect victims and ensure perpetrators face justice.
The communiqué released after the meeting, signed by National Vice President Zone C, Comrade Amaka Agbo, and Zonal Secretary, Comrade Doris Chioma Alex, also urged pregnant women to register early for antenatal care at accredited health facilities.
The ZEC called on healthcare providers to intensify efforts to safeguard maternal health and reduce preventable deaths.In a bid to protect young girls from modern-day risks, the ZEC warned against the dangers involved in online dating, advising that meetings with strangers always occur in public places and with trusted companions.
The ZEC also applauded the National Assembly’s recent ban on sachet alcohol sales, recognizing its positive impact on curbing youth restiveness and health risks.With the festive season approaching, NAWOJ Zone C appealed to drivers and road users alike to exercise heightened caution to prevent road accidents that often mar holiday celebrations.
The meeting, chaired by Comrade Amaka Agbo, also featured secretaries from Ebonyi, Enugu, and Abia States, including Comrade Doris Chioma Alex. They as well congratulated Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo on his electoral victory and commended Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma for hosting the NAWOJ National Executive Council meeting.
