Anambra Police Command Prohibits Unauthorised Marches and Protests, Awka

The Anambra State Police Command has issued a directive to all individuals and groups, urging them to refrain from organizing or participating in marches or street protests within Awka, the state capital, in order to ensure public safety, maintain peace, and preserve public order.
According to an official statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command reports significant progress in combating cultism and violent crimes, attributing this success to sustained intelligence-led operations, strategic patrols, arrests, and community-based policing efforts. The statement notes that police personnel recently engaged in a shootout, resulting in the neutralization of a member of the Vikings Confraternity's strike squad, who was intent on avenging a confraternity-related killing.
The Command warns that unauthorized marches or protests may compromise these achievements, disrupt public peace, and cause undue inconvenience to law-abiding citizens. While affirming citizens' constitutional rights to lawful assembly and freedom of expression, the Police emphasize that these rights must be exercised responsibly and in strict compliance with the law.
The Command states that any unauthorized processions, street occupations, or demonstrations that impede traffic flow, disrupt commercial activities, or amount to a public disturbance will be prohibited. Organizers and interested parties are advised to explore alternative, lawful channels, including consultation with relevant authorities, submission of formal representations, and cooperation with stakeholders.
The Command encourages members of the public to remain calm, continue their lawful pursuits, and report any suspicious activities or movements that may threaten public peace to the nearest police station.
