NLC Anambra Marks IWD with Call to Invest in Women's Future

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Anambra State Council marked International Women's Day 2026 with a vibrant celebration themed "Give to Gain" at the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Secretariat in Awka.
The event emphasized investing in women through mentorship, shared resources, and community strengthening, aligning with the UN's focus on "Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls."
The NUT Anambra State Council Chairperson, Lady Eucheria Uyawnne, urged women to unite against challenges, declaring, "What men can do, women can do better." She highlighted family biases favoring boys over girls, invoking the adage: "When you train a girl child, you train a nation."
Lady Eucheria stressed equal treatment for all children, including house helps, and prioritizing girls' education so they can speak out against abuse. "Give generously," she advised, "as it opens doors tomorrow."
In a lecture titled "Menopause: Signs and Causes," NLC Vice Chairperson Comrade Mrs. Edith Onwuka described menopause as a natural cessation of menses, typically starting between ages 45 and 55. She outlined three stages: premenopause (irregular periods), menopause proper, and postmenopause (from age 55) and key symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, weight gain, irritability, vaginal dryness, low libido, urinary infections, and bone health issues.
Mrs Onwuka also recommended management strategies as: adopting a healthy lifestyle with reduced carbs and more vegetables; take calcium and vitamin supplements; exercise regularly; manage stress by saying "no" when needed; undergo routine checkups like blood pressure, and sugar, and avoid unnecessary drugs intake.
Also, the NAWOJ Chairperson Comrade Tochukwu Ifejika called for a "women supporting women" mindset to drive success and invited attendees to NAWOJ's March 31 event, which will honour women's achievers. Participant Mrs. Ekpu Gloria, Director and Head of Department at Ayemelum Local Government, praised the program as "eye-opening" and urged it become annual to combat women's silent struggles due to ignorance.
Attendees included representatives from NULGE, NAWOJ, NUT, Anambra State Judicial Staff Union, RATTAWU, and NANNM, among others. The union reiterated its non-political role in advancing women's welfare, commending the Anambra State government's efforts.
