Women's Organizations Rally for Increased Representation in National Assembly

A coalition of women's groups, including the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Anambra State Chapter, Federation of Muslim Women in Nigeria (FMWN), and National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), organized a rally today to advocate for a 34 percent representation quota in politics, equivalent to 74 seats in the National Assembly.
The United Nations-sponsored event featured a march through the streets, culminating in the presentation of a petition to lawmakers. Speakers emphasized the importance of women's participation in governance, with Barrister Amara Muojeke, Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Anambra State Chapter, stressing that women's representation is vital for national development.
Hon Prof Oby Orogbu, representative of Awka North and South in the National Assembly, assured that the bill will be presented to the National Assembly, while Lady Theresa Nnalue, State President of NCWS, highlighted women's capabilities and urged support for their political aspirations.
The event highlighted the need for women's voices to be heard in governance, with participants calling for unity and support among women to achieve their goals.
