LP Signals 2027 Readiness as Anambra Primaries Produce Consensus Candidates

The Labour Party (LP) in Anambra State has taken an early step toward the 2027 general elections with the successful conclusion of its primary elections, producing consensus candidates for key legislative positions and projecting a message of unity, preparedness and continuity.
The exercise, held in Awka on Saturday, brought together party leaders, delegates, electoral officials, security personnel and media representatives from across the state. At the end of the process, Venerable Tochukwu Sagacious Ikezue emerged as the party's candidate for Anambra Central Senatorial District, while Barrister Kachi Aghasili secured the ticket for Awka North/Awka South Federal Constituency. Hon. Anthony Ikenna Okafor emerged for Nnewi North/Nnewi South/Ekwusigo Federal Constituency, and Mrs. Oby Okoye was chosen to represent the party in the Njikoka/Dunukofia/Anaocha Federal Constituency race.
Declaring the results, Returning Officer Mr. Iduma Christian Mayor described the exercise as peaceful, transparent and orderly. He congratulated the successful candidates and urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them by the party.
Beyond the emergence of candidates, the primaries served as a demonstration of the Labour Party's efforts to strengthen internal cohesion ahead of the next electoral cycle. State Chairman, Hon. Peter Okoye, revealed that the party had undertaken a reconciliation process through a specially constituted "peace room," which brought together stakeholders from different segments of the party structure.
According to him, the initiative helped address concerns, foster understanding and reinforce unity within the party. He expressed confidence that the Labour Party was entering the 2027 political season from a position of strength and stability. "Our goal is not merely to increase the number of candidates," he noted, "but to present credible individuals who can provide quality representation and uphold the values of the party."
Hon. Okoye further emphasized the Labour Party's roots as a workers' movement, highlighting its historical connections with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). He maintained that discipline, accountability and people-centred leadership would remain central to the party's vision. For the newly elected candidates, the occasion marked the beginning of a new political journey.
Venerable Tochukwu Sagacious Ikezue, the party's senatorial candidate for Anambra Central, described his emergence as both a privilege and a responsibility. He thanked God, party faithful and stakeholders for their support and pledged to work toward meaningful transformation across the district.
He also commended party officials, electoral personnel and security agencies for ensuring a smooth process, while reaffirming the party's commitment to protecting the democratic choices of voters.
Similarly, Barrister Kachi Aghasili accepted her nomination with gratitude and called on party members to intensify grassroots mobilization. She stressed the need to reconnect with communities and communicate the Labour Party's vision to voters across Awka North and Awka South. Her campaign, she said, would focus on community welfare, inclusive development and responsive representation.
Mrs. Oby Okoye, who emerged for the Njikoka/Dunukofia/Anaocha constituency, attributed her success to divine guidance and the unwavering support of party members. She urged supporters to remain united and optimistic as preparations for future elections gather momentum.
Hon. Anthony Ikenna Okafor also expressed appreciation to party leaders and members for entrusting him with the mandate to fly the party's flag. He pledged to work closely with stakeholders and constituents to advance the party's objectives and deliver effective representation.
As political parties gradually begin positioning themselves for the 2027 elections, the Labour Party's successful primaries in Anambra State offer an early indication of its determination to remain a major force in the state's political landscape. With reconciliation efforts completed and candidates now in place, the party appears focused on consolidating its support base and presenting itself as a disciplined and united platform for the years ahead.
