Anambra Police Begin Crackdown on Unregistered Vehicles, Concealed Number Plates
By Chizoba Njaka
The Anambra State Police Command has commenced the enforcement of regulations against unregistered vehicles and the concealment of vehicle number plates, in line with directives issued by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
In a statement released to journalists in Awka, on June 16, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, explained that the enforcement exercise became necessary due to the increasing number of unregistered vehicles on the roads and the growing trend of motorists deliberately obscuring their registration numbers.
He noted that such practices hinder effective vehicle identification, frustrate crime-fighting efforts, and pose a threat to public safety.
According to the Command, security operatives have been directed to enforce existing laws prohibiting the use of unregistered vehicles and any form of tampering with registration plates. These include covering, bending, defacing, removing, altering, or displaying unauthorized number plates. The police warned that offenders will be sanctioned in accordance with the law.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, said the enforcement drive is designed to strengthen security across the state, enhance intelligence-gathering efforts, and enable the prompt identification of vehicles connected to criminal activities.
CP Orutugu advised vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles are duly registered and that their registration plates are clearly displayed and unobstructed at all times.
The Command also stated that officers deployed for the exercise have been directed to conduct themselves with professionalism, courtesy, and strict adherence to the law. It reiterated its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, as well as maintaining the safety and security of residents and visitors across Anambra State.
It restated its commitment to the protection of lives and property and to promoting the safety and well-being of all residents and visitors in the state.
