LP Senatorial Candidate Ikezue Demands Refund of N110bn Lawmakers’ Allowance Following Court Verdict

The Labour Party Senatorial Candidate for Anambra Central, Ven. Tochukwu Sagacious Ikezue, has called on lawmakers who benefited from the controversial N110 billion vehicle procurement and support allowance to refund the funds and issue a public apology following a Federal High Court judgment that invalidated the allocation.
Justice Yellim Bogoro of the Federal High Court in Lagos, on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, ruled that the allowance was unlawful, a judgment that Ikezue hailed as a landmark victory for accountability, transparency, and the Nigerian people.
He commended the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) for initiating the legal challenge and praised the judiciary for upholding constitutional principles and good governance.
In a statement issued on June 9, 2026, Ikezue said, “I commend SERAP for courageously challenging this unjust allocation and the Judiciary for standing firm in defence of the Constitution and the principles of good governance.”
He expressed concern that the allocation was approved at a time when millions of Nigerians were grappling with economic difficulties, including rising inflation, unemployment, and insecurity. According to him, the decision represented a breach of public trust and highlighted a disconnect between elected representatives and the realities faced by ordinary citizens.
The candidate urged all beneficiaries of the allowance to demonstrate moral, legal, and ethical responsibility by returning the funds. He further called on the leadership of the National Assembly to issue an unreserved apology to Nigerians for approving a provision he described as one designed primarily for the benefit of lawmakers.
Ven. Ikezue argued that such actions weaken public confidence in democratic institutions and undermine efforts to promote responsible governance. He also urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to prioritize the recovery of any unlawfully obtained funds, stressing that the fight against corruption must be pursued without bias or selectivity.
He further advised Nigerians to keep the issue in mind as future elections approach, maintaining that any lawmaker who retains the funds despite the court ruling should be considered unfit to hold public office.
Ven. Ikezue also emphasized that public service demands integrity, accountability, and sacrifice. He urged that any recovered funds be returned to the federal treasury and redirected toward programmes and projects that would benefit the Nigerian people.
