‎The Anambra State Police Command has launched a comprehensive investigation into an alleged child trafficking case following the rescue of a 37-year-old woman, identified as Anurika Nweme, from an angry mob by officers attached to the Awada Divisional Headquarters.

‎According to a statement issued by the command, the incident occurred on June 23, at Divine Mercy Hospital along Eze Iweka Road, Awada, Obosi. Reports indicate that the suspect allegedly gained access to the hospital's maternity ward while dressed in clothing resembling a nurse's uniform and was later observed secretly recording videos of newborn babies.

‎Hospital staff and concerned members of the public reportedly confronted the woman after noticing her activities. During questioning, she allegedly claimed to be a staff member of the hospital. However, hospital management subsequently verified that her name did not appear on the institution's staff register.

‎The situation quickly degenerated as a crowd gathered and attempted to assault the suspect. Police operatives responded promptly, rescued her from the mob, and took her into protective custody to prevent any act of mob justice.

‎The command disclosed that the suspect is currently assisting investigators with useful information that may help uncover other individuals allegedly connected to the suspected trafficking operation.

‎The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu assured residents that a thorough investigation is underway and pledged that the public would be kept informed of significant developments as the inquiry progresses.

‎The command also called on hospitals and other healthcare facilities across the state to strengthen security measures, including staff identification and access control procedures, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
