‎As Nigeria prepares to mark its 66th Independence Anniversary, the Labour Party Senatorial Candidate for Anambra Central, Ven. Tochukwu Sagacious Ikezue, has called for renewed efforts to build a safer, more united and prosperous nation.

‎Ikezue made the remarks while addressing newsmen in Awka as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, highlighting key areas that require greater attention, including credible elections, improved security, youth and women empowerment, food safety, and the promotion of national unity.

‎According to him, Nigeria, at 66, is old enough to attain the aspirations associated with its status as the “Giant of Africa,” stressing that the country must intensify efforts to achieve its full potential.

‎He also called for credible elections, urging stakeholders to work towards conducting electoral processes that would strengthen public confidence and enhance Nigeria's democratic image before the international community.

‎The Labour Party candidate further urged the government and relevant authorities to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity and banditry, which he identified as major challenges to the nation's development and the safety of citizens.

‎Ikezue also advocated stronger empowerment programmes targeting young people and women, saying greater attention should be given to creating opportunities that would enable them to become economically productive and self-reliant.

‎On food and consumer protection, he called for increased scrutiny of goods entering the Nigerian market, particularly imported food products. He expressed concern over what he described as the apparent spread of genetically modified organism (GMO) products in the markets and called for greater attention to what Nigerians consume.

‎The senatorial candidate also appealed for national programmes and policies that promote unity rather than division, stressing the importance of initiatives capable of bringing Nigerians together across ethnic, religious and political lines.

‎Ikezue said the Independence Anniversary should provide an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country's journey, identify areas requiring improvement and renew their commitment to building a nation that works for all citizens.
