Anambra State Boosts Waste Management, Tackles Pollution with New Laws

The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Felix Odimegwu, has revealed that the state has made significant strides in improving waste management and sanitation across the state, particularly in Awka, by decentralizing the system and empowering local government chairmen to take charge of waste management in their areas.
Speaking in an interview with journalists in his office at Awka, Odimegwu explained that the ministry has put in place a centralized program that allows local government chairmen to have direct supervisory roles over waste management, reducing response times and improving accountability. This approach has sparked healthy competition among local governments, driving improvements in cleanliness and sanitation.
In his word, "We have taken waste management to the grassroots level, making sure that people at the local level feel the impact. The local government chairmen are now the first responders, and they are better equipped to handle waste management in their areas."
According to the Commissioner, the ministry is also working on new environmental laws to address existing gaps and strengthen pollution control. One of the key principles being introduced is the "polluter pays principle," which holds individuals and organizations financially accountable for environmental damage, he stated.
"We want to make sure that environmental protection is a shared responsibility," Odimegwu emphasized. "We are going to make polluters pay for the damage they cause, and this will help us to improve waste management and reduce pollution in the state."
He also said that since the introduction of the reforms in 2022, Anambra State has made significant progress in environmental sustainability rankings, and the ministry is committed to continuing its efforts to make the state a model for green, clean, and healthy living.
