Peter Obi Warns Against Vote Buying, Calls for Genuine Service in Nigerian

After casting his vote at Polling Unit 019, Umudim Akasi, Aniocha Local Government, at approximately 11:47 a.m, the former Governor of Anambra State and prominent presidential aspirant under the umbrella of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, expressed deep concern over the state of democracy in Nigeria, highlighting the damaging practice of vote buying during elections.
Speaking from personal experience, Mr. Obi condemned the exchange of cash ranging from ₦20,000 to ₦50,000 for votes, warning that it undermines the country’s future.
Addressing young unemployed Nigerians, he asked, “If you accept ₦20,000 now, what will you receive next month when there is no voting?” He urged voters to consider the long-term consequences, noting that selling votes is tantamount to selling away education, healthcare, employment, and overall development.
The Labour Party flag bearer, contrasted Nigeria’s election practices with those of neighbouring West African countries, which he says have better-observed elections without widespread vote buying. He called on journalists to work together to curb this practice and preserve democratic integrity.
On the elections, Mr. Obi expressed respect for all candidates, saying, “Anyone involved in the election is a brother to me.” While he is not contesting a governorship seat, Obi declared his intention to run for the presidency, emphasizing the need for true service in Nigerian politics. “Whoever wins governorship will serve the people well,” he noted.
He also underscored Nigeria’s urgent need for improved public services, particularly in education and healthcare and voiced support for nursing schools to produce the skilled manpower necessary to ensure that every community has access to primary healthcare facilities.
Congratulating the INEC chairman, Obi urged him to learn from his predecessors and prioritize service to the people. “None of us will hold office forever. It is important to serve humanity and society while in position,” he concluded.
