Anambra: NAWOJ Urges Swift Passage of Special Seats Bill, Citing Imperative of Inclusive Governance

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Anambra State Chapter has expressed its unequivocal support for the Special Seats Bill (HB1349), currently before the National Assembly, describing it as a crucial measure to address the historical imbalance in women's representation in Nigeria's legislative sector.
In a statement issued by the Chairperson NAWOJ, Anambra State Chapter, Comrade Tochukwu Ifejika, emphasized that the bill is not a matter of concession or tokenism, but rather a necessary step towards ensuring equitable representation and strengthening Nigeria's democracy.
The association lamented the glaring underrepresentation of women in legislative bodies, noting that Nigerian women have demonstrated exceptional competence and resilience in various sectors, but remain marginalized in politics.
NAWOJ Anambra calls for the urgent passage of the bill and outlined a series of actions to mobilize support, including engaging with lawmakers, organizing media campaigns, and collaborating with women's groups and civil society organizations.
The association appealed to female lawmakers, senators, and honorable members to champion the bill, and urged political parties, professional groups, traditional rulers, and community leaders to lend their support.
The statement concluded that inclusive governance is a constitutional imperative and a prerequisite for accountability, effective policymaking, and socio-economic development, emphasizing that women's leadership is essential to Nigeria's democratic progress.
