Super Eagles' World Cup Hopes Hang in Balance as FIFA Delays DR Congo Ruling

Nigeria's football fans are on the edge of their seats as they wait for FIFA's verdict on the Nigeria Football Federation's (NFF) petition against Democratic Republic of Congo. The NFF alleges that DR Congo fielded ineligible players in the African play-offs, which could potentially change the outcome of the match.
The Super Eagles had a heartbreaking loss to DR Congo on penalties, but they're still hopeful of making it to the 2026 World Cup in Mexico. NFF President Ibrahim Gusau says they're still waiting to hear from FIFA, while General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi is confident in their case.
The controversy centers around DR Congo players who allegedly switched nationalities improperly. FIFA regulations require players to hold a passport of the country they represent, but Congolese law doesn't permit dual nationality. If FIFA rules in Nigeria's favor, it could mean a major upset in the World Cup qualification process.
As the wait continues, players like Alex Iwobi remain optimistic. "We're still waiting — hopefully we can go to the World Cup," he said.
The National Sports Commission Chairman, Shehu Dikko, suggests that the case might even go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport if FIFA's decision isn't in Nigeria's favor.
