Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command’s Vehicle Crimes and Robbery Unit (VCRU) have arrested three suspects and recovered a firearm, suspected illicit drugs, and other items during separate operations conducted across the state on June 19.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed in a statement issued in Awka on June 20 that the arrests followed patrol and stop-and-search activities by VCRU operatives along the Igbariam/Achalla Road.
According to the statement, the operatives intercepted two 27-year-old men, Williams Ndifon and David Missang, who were riding a Daylong motorcycle. A search conducted on them reportedly led to the recovery of a locally-made Beretta pistol, one live ammunition, six mobile phones, two power banks, a sledgehammer, a chisel/metal cracking tool, suspected cannabis sativa, and a black polo shirt with the inscription “Nigeria Army Barracks Youths Foundation (NABYF).” The motorcycle was also impounded.
SP Ikenga further stated that in another operation carried out later the same day at about 6:00pm, VCRU operatives, acting on intelligence, arrested 21-year-old Oluchukwu Onyekwe at Agukwu Nri in Anaocha Local Government Area.
The suspect was allegedly found with a quantity of dried weeds suspected to be cannabis sativa, while preliminary investigations reportedly linked him to cult-related activities in the area.
The three suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue to unravel further details surrounding their alleged activities.
The Anambra State Police Command urged residents to continue supporting security agencies by providing credible and timely information, noting that public cooperation remains essential in the fight against crime and maintaining peace across the state.
